Become a Grovemade Piece Maker
If you’re looking for some extra income and are good with your hands, like to set your own work schedule and have your own Portland area workspace, then Grovemade piecework just might be your perfect side hustle.
Space Requirements
You will need three separate areas for different steps in process...
Sanding
- Most of our products require a fair amount of hand and orbital sanding as the first step.
- Good lighting is a must so you can catch imperfections before sanding is finished.
Finishing
- All of our wood products use a natural oil based finish that is wiped on and off of the sanded parts.
- Once the oil is wiped on and off, it will need to dry for 24 hours at room temperature (70 degrees) and have good airflow around the parts - so you will need enough space to stage things for drying.
Assembly
- Cleaning metal parts with a cleaning solution
- Applying leather, wool and/or cork to metal and wood parts
- Screwing metal to finished wood parts (with a drill or driver)

Piece workers are responsible for obtaining their own consumable supplies.

Scheduling
We like to establish a regular weekly drop off and pick up time. This is when makers will:
- Drop off parts finished pieces (you will need your own reliable transportation)
- Pick up new material to be worked on and dropped off the following week
- Get trained on any new processes
Communication
We prefer to work with makers who have an upfront, open, and honest communication style.
- Schedules change. We get it. But giving us as much notice to a change in schedule is always appreciated.
- We are always here to help with any questions throughout the process.
